Who comes to Maine in January? Not many people, I assure you, but this January graced us with two fantastic houseguests and Maine delivered in every way for them.
Cailyn flew north mid-month for her third solo getaway to Maine, and we had a blast. We spent Saturday on a Camden adventure, where we started as early birds at The Place bakery (IYKYK). Although they're definitely a hometown local bakery, they were just written up in the NY Times, so the secret is out- glad we got our croissant cinnamon bun and maple pecan twist while they were available.
On our newfound sugar high, we headed toward Rockland to discover a new lighthouse (see post about last year's visit to Rockland Breakwater here). What a day to bundle up and trudge up the path to the Owls Head Lighthouse- we had the place to ourselves! It was stormy, brisk and beautiful.
Just a week later, Maine welcomed our friend Lori who was a trooper, taking on several house tasks (car maintenance, testing smoke detectors, cleaning the fridge- can you say BORING!?), and getting in some sights for good measure. Temps were brutally cold, but nonetheless, we adventured to Pemaquid, took walks, and ate pie (mixed berry and banana cream, to be specific).
We had terrific shore bird sightings, but sadly, no Pileated Woodpecker. Hopefully next time. Thanks for visiting, dear friends!
Beautiful photography in a place that is both bleak and beguiling at this time of year.
