Hardwood Floors

In the summer of 2018, we got down to business about exploring our hardwood floor selection.  We knew we wanted oak, preferably local, and were leaning toward the company Maine Traditions.  The selection still looked pretty enormous, as you can see.  But we tentatively settled on a wire-brushed, prefinished red oak from Maine in 5 inch width, not too wide, not too skinny.

Before we could be certain, we really wanted to see the floor in vivo.  This seemed like a big decision, one difficult to make based upon viewing a small 2x2 foot sample.  Michael at Hammonds suggested visiting his friend Dave, who had recently installed this very floor in his kitchen.  Sure enough, a call to Dave and a drive through a November snowsquall brought us right to his home.

Dave and Jean, their dog and cats, welcomed us warmly and allowed us to stare intently, albeit a bit awkwardly, at their floor.  While it seemed a bit unusual to intrude upon a stranger's home, they were warm and welcoming, telling us the whole story of their kitchen renovation in their historic farmhouse.

The visit sealed the deal.  The floor looks rustic, warm, and very welcoming.  Photos below show our newly floored home in January 2019!  Beautiful!

  1. So glad to have been a part of this process! The end result is beautiful-- more perfectly right than I thought it would be!

  2. Casey looks pleased with the floor too. No wonder, because it looks as if you chose the material with her color palette in mind.
