Driving north late Thanksgiving night turned out to be a breeze-- no traffic, and the weather was clear. Arrived in time for a work weekend of clearing fallen trees, splitting wood, and watching the tide rise and fall.
In our family, baked beans are a hearty cold weather staple, and boy were we glad we had prepped the family recipe after a long day of work. Steaming hot beans, buttery brown bread, and a cold adult beverage were just what these tired bodies needed.
According to some website... "Baked beans are potentially more fattening than plain beans... because they contain... sugar, molasses, and fatty meats..." oh well! Who compares baked beans to green beans, anyway? No relation, as far as I can tell.
Tis the season for comforting food. And patience. These beans take all day, and are worth the wait. Patience is also needed while watching the house go up.

And we are being rewarded for our virtues handsomely-- the house went from one story to two in a matter of weeks. The view from the open second floor is still stunning... imagine how nice it will be closed in, with heat!
We're racing the clock with winter pending, but the builders assure us we'll come out ahead. We'll risk it! Giving thanks for the gift of family in this special spot on the coast. Wishing you and yours a season of gratitude and peace.
